Back in the 1950s and 60s, Edmonton welcomed a wave of Scottish families who had crossed an ocean to build new lives on the prairies. They found work, made homes, and settled in. But somewhere between the Alberta winters and the long stretch of miles between here and the Highlands, they missed the sound of the pipes, the swing of a ceilidh, and the easy comfort of familiar faces.
So they did what Scots have always done. They gathered.
What started as a handful of homesick friends soon became something official. The society took shape as a club, a place where newcomers could hold onto their traditions, speak of the old country, and raise a glass with people who understood exactly what they meant.
For decades, we were a haven for expats. Then the years did what years do. The first members grew older. Their children grew up. And Edmonton itself grew into a city full of people curious about Scottish culture. So we grew too.
Today the Edmonton Scottish Society is less about where you came from and more about what you love. We have become a true culture and heritage society, welcoming young families, longtime members, and curious Edmontonians who simply enjoy a good dance and better company.
Some things have not changed one bit. We still gather. We still tell the stories. We still keep the music, the dance, and the traditions alive, and we pass them on to the next generation with the same care the first members gave them to us. More than half a century later, the doors are still open. And there is always room for one more.
Whether you’re ready to make it official or just have a question rattling about, we’d love to hear from you. Become a member and join the fun, or drop us a line and say hello.
